Skewen v Trebanos 16/9/17

SKEWEN V Trebanos

On Saturday the 9th September our near neighbours Trebanos were the visitors to Tennant Park. Recent matches have not always gone our way and with Trebanos starting well in the Championship a tough game was expected.

Skewen started well with early pressure resulting in a penalty converted by Anthony Busselli in the 5th minute. Skewen 3 Trebanos 0.

Skewen maintained the early pressure and on the 8thminute a penalty kick to touch on the Trebanos 22 saw an attacking lineout for Skewen . The ball was quickly fed to outside half Anthony Busselli , who, drawing the defence across field, brought in  and fed the ball to Captain Andrew Collins on the inside angle to race for a try which was converted by Anthony Busselli. Skewen 10 Trebanos 0.

Trebanos fought back well gaining more territory and possession and on the 20th minute were rewarded with a penalty converted by their full back Skewen 10 Trebanos 3.

Skewen again took the game to Trebanos. By now the Skewen set piece was growing in strength and providing an excellent platform for the backs.

On the 31st minute a solid Skewen scrum enabled the ball to be fed quickly to replacement outside half Adam Rowlands who, feeding the ball to centre Andrew Collins, looped around drawing the defence enabling Collins to bring in co centre Tom Kingdom on the inside line to break the defence, committing the full back he slipped the ball to Flanker Dai Morgan who was following up on his inside to race in for the try converted by Adam Rowlands. Skewen 17 Trebanos 3.

By now Skewen had the upper hand in both territory and possession and were able to finish the half with another try when a Trebanos kick ahead was retrieved by replacement full back Gareth Walters who attacking the Trebanos defence gave a clever pass inside to winger Gareth Morris who making ground fed the ever present Dai Morgan who crossed near the post for a try converted by Adam Rowlands.

Half time score Skewen 24 Trebanos 3

Trebanos far from being beaten came out in the second half with intent and on the 10th minute following good phase play and interpassing by the three quarters space was made on the outside enabling ex Skewen player Keeron Whiteman to cross for a try which was converted. Skewen 24 Trebanos 10.

Skewen were able to increase their lead on the 28th minute with a penalty by full back Gareth Walters. Skewen 27Trebanos 10.

On the 32nd minute Trebanos were able to retrieve a Skewen kick ahead and run it back at speed with good phase play and interpassing again creating spaces and allowing centre Lloyd Phillips to cross near the post for a try which was converted. Skewen 27 Trebanos15.

The strong Skewen set piece created the platform to ensure that Skewen had the control to ensure that the game to be played out in and around the Trebanos 22, and on the 36th minute, following a series of forward phases, the ball was fed through the backs to winger Mathew Billet who crossed for the 4th and bonus point try which was converted by full back Gareth Walters. Skewen 34Trebanos 15.

Although well beaten Trebanos fought to the end and were rewarded with a consolation try with the last play of the game.

Final score Skewen 34 Trebanos 20.

Following a disappointing game against Rhydfelin it was imperative that as a team Skewen had to put in a good performance today and to a man they did. A solid set piece enabled the half backs to control both the territory and possession. The three quarter line led well by Captain Andrew Collins continued to show their strength in defence but also showed their ability to move the ball well and attack the opposition at pace. An excellent all round performance.
