Skewen v Cwmllynfell match report

On Friday the 20th March, Cwmllynfell were the visitors toTenant Park for our first game under floodlights this year.

To date Cwmllynfell were one of only  two teams in our league that we had not beaten so far this season, the other being Bonymaen.

On a cold evening the game like the spectators took a long time to warm up.

Despite their lowly position in the league Cwm fought hard at every ruck and maul and throughout the 1st half neither side were able to stamp their authority on what was a very stop start game.

Both sides had periods of pressure but scoring opportunities were limited, Skewens only first half try coming from No 8 Liam Grice following scrum pressure near the Cwm line, the conversion being close but unsuccessful.

Cwm answered with a try and penalty of their own.

However the second half showed another dominant performance by the Skewen 8 at scrum and Lineout which meant that Skewen began to gain more control over the pace and style of the game, scoring three tries in the second half to Cwms one.

No 8 Liam Grice scored his second try this time crossing following a driving lineout near to the Cwm line, converted by Anthony Busselli.

Centre Tom Kingdom was able to capitalise on forward pressure and good ball retention taking the ball up in the Cwm 22, stepping inside his opposite number to score under the posts.

The bonus point try came from a concerted period of pressure which led to a number of penalties being conceded by Cwm in the red zone. The final penalty bringing down a scrum led to the referee awarding a penalty try to Skewen.

Anthony Busselli added the 2 conversions and also added a drop goal to his tally.

Final score Skewen 29 Cwmllynfell 13.
