08/09/18 Aberafan Quins vs Skewen: Match Report

On Saturday the 8th September, Skewen RFC travelled the short distance to Port Talbot for the first away game of the season to play Aberafan Harlequins.

Following last week’s disappointing performance better things were expected by both players and supports alike and neither were to be disappointed.

Skewen started the game with pace and enthusiasm, with commitment at the ruck and maul and a willingness to use the ball effectively through the hands.

At 7 mins, following continued pressure, Skewen scored a penalty by Anthony Busselli.

At 10 mins Skewen scored their first try by Tom Kingdom. Following a kick out by the Quins received by full back Anthony Busselli who attacked the Quins defence before feeding Mark Harvey who turned the quins defence inside out before passing to Tom Kingdom on his inside shoulder to cross under the post. Conversion by Anthony Busselli

At 12 Mins Skewen scored their 3rd try from scrum on the Quins 10 yard line No 8 Joe Lewis picked up and fed scrum half Jaimie Kirkhouse on the blindside. Making ground into the Quins 22 he fed Richard Daffy Davies on his inside shoulder to cross for an unconverted try

At 23 Mins Skewen scored their 4th bonus point try. Following a penalty kick to touch on the Quins 22 the clean line out was taken up by the forwards putting the Quins defence on the back foot . The ball was then quickly fed to winger Sam Collins who stepped inside his opposition wing to score an unconverted try.

At 33 mins following a series of defensive penalties against Skewen the referee awarded the Quins a penalty try following an offside some 15 yards from the try line.

Skewen ended the first half at 38 Mins with a try from the master finisher Mark Harvey. Following a missed penalty attempt by Anthony Busselli the Quins dropped out back into the hands of Busselli who taking the ball up fed the forwards who made good ground turning the defence before the ball came into the hands of winger Mark Harvey who then proceeded to turn the defence inside out scoring an unconverted try.

Half time score Skewen 24 Quins 10

Within 5 mins of the second half Skewen scored their 5th try from Richard Daffy Davies. The quins turned over the ball on their 10 yard line and kicked ahead in to the hands of full back Anthony Busselli who jinked his way well into the Quins half before feeding the ball along the line to winger Sam Collins who then passed inside to Rees Jenkins who was in close support. Rees committed the quins defence before feeding back to Sam Collins who keeping the ball alive fed Daffy on his inside for him to cross for his 2nd and Skewens best try of the game, which went unconverted.

25 mins into the second half Skewen scored their 6th and final try. Skewen forwards turned over the ball on the Quins 10 yard line Scrum Half replacement Liam Kirkhouse quickly attacked the Quins defence on the blindside feeding winger Mark Harvey who passed to full back Anthony Busselli  who crossed for a try under the posts which he then  converted

Towards the end of the second half quins scored their final try of the game following a turnover on their 10 yards line. The ball went blind and saw good interpassing between backs and some bobbling passes amongst the forwards which somehow bounced loose into the hands of a Quins player crossing the line.

Final Score Skewen 36 Aberafan Harlequins 15

This game was everything that last week’s game wasn’t. It was played at pace, with commitment and enthusiasm shown by everyone from 1-20. Every player put in a performance. The whole structure of the team improved beyond recognition. The game was controlled well at outside half by new boy Sion King. There was a good understanding between No8 Joe Lewis and his scrum halves Jamie and Liam Kirkhouse. The back three attacked the defence, both centres took the ball up well setting the forwards targets enabling them to take up the ball turning defences and giving quick possession for the backs to use effectively. The back row was ever present in defence and attack and the set piece gave quality ball for the backs to use effectively.

Positives loads…….. Negatives perhaps the line out could be more consistent although the introduction of Aled Mogford certainly made a difference.

It has been pointed that perhaps Daffy did get his hat trick as he was the one who gave away the penalty which gave the Quins the penalty try. He’s claiming he scored that one as well!!!!!!!!!!
