Skewen v Glais Silver Ball Quarter Final

On Weds the 16th March Skewen travelled to the Talbot Athletic ground to play our near neighbours Glais in the quarter final of the Glamorgan County Silver Ball competition.

To have reached this stage of the competition both teams had to have won all of their 10 selected silver ball games. So,despite the fact that our opposition were playing in Division 3, a tough cup game was expected.

Indeed for the 1st 10 minutes it was nip and tuck with both sideattempting to move the ball at every opportunity.

Skewens 1st try came on the 10 minute mark a penalty kick to touch and quick ball off the top saw a  clever miss pass from outside half Anthony Busselli create sufficient  space for centre Andrew Collins to glide past the defence to score near the posts. Converted by Anthony Busselli 7-0

Skewens 2nd try again came from a penalty kick to touch. With the ball secured the following 15 yard rolling maul crossed for second row Reece Jenkins to claim the try.12-0

Skewens 3rd try came from an excellent line break by centre Tom Kingdom from the halfway line leaving everyone for dead even his support. He was able to draw the tackle of the Glais full back and hold the ball up long enough for an offload to flanker Dai Morgan who crossed to score. Converted by Anthony Busselli 19-0.

Skewen were not having things all their own way. The Glais backs continued to take every opportunity to run any possession and to move the ball wide as often as possible. Indeed a clean break by the Glais winger took the ball from the halfway line to deep inside the Skewen 22 and with good support at the breakdown the Glais pack was able to roll the subsequent maul over the line for a try. 19-5

Skewens 4th try came a minute later with a piece of Mark Harvey magic. Receiving the ball on the Skewen 22 he proceeded to run through, around and passed almost every Glais defender taking the ball deep into the Glais 22 before giving the perfect pass to Anthony Busselli who had raced up in support on his inside to score the try which he also converted. 24-5

Half time Skewen 24 Glais 5

Skewen continued to maintain the pace and pressure that had built up in the first half. Early scrum pressure deep in the Glais 22 enabled No 8 Aled Mogford to pick up from the base and drive down the 10 channel. He was able to stand up in the tackle and offload to outside half Anthony Busselli who had cut a line at pace from out to in to score close to the post to make his own conversion attempt easier.31-5

Skewens 6th try again came from a solid scrum outside the Glais 22. Clever movement off the ball by the backs enabledwinger Mark Harvey to glide through the gap and race over for the try, Converted by Anthony Busselli. 38-5

Skewens 7th try again came from the pace of winger Mark Harvey who had followed up in support of centre Gareth Morris who had broken through a series of Glais tackles before giving the perfect scoring pass to the winger . 43-5

It was mark Harvey who was on hand to score Skewens 8th try. Following some good pressure and phase play by the Glais pack and turn over near to the Skewen 22 was quickly moved to the winger who raced in to score from 60 metres turning the Glais defence inside and out. 48-5

Skewens 9th and final try again came from winger Mark Harvey. A defensive Skewen lineout on their 22 was quickly in the hands of outside half Anthony Busselli who stepped inside the Glais defence and took the ball into the Glais half before giving the try scoring pass to winger Mark Harvey who had supported on the outside to score near the posts for Anthony Busselli to convert 55-5
