Skewen v Nant Conwy Match Report

On Saturday the28th March, Skewen RFC welcomed Nant Conwy to Tenant Park on a cold and blustery day.

With Nant Conwy joint leaders of Division 1 North, and the prize for the winners being a place in the semi-finals of the WRU plate, a tough match was anticipated.

From the first whistle it was apparent that Nant Conwy were a fit, well drilled and physical side and it was clear that a hard cup match was to follow.

Both sides had periods of pressure but strong defences meant that scoring opportunities were limited.

The only difference between the two sides in the early phases of the game was Skewens dominance at the scrum.

It was from a scrum on the Nant 22 that led to Skewens only first half score. No 8 Ed Price picked up from the base and broke blind breaking the 1st up tackle. He was supported on the blind side by James Ball and Matthew Williams giving a number of attacking options and a number of defensive problems which meant that he was able to take the ball to the line for a try which went unconverted.

Skewen spent the final 10 minutes of the first half clamped on the Nant line but good defence and the half time whistle meant that no further score was made

The half time score Skewen 5 Nant Conwy 0

The second half continued very much in the same manner with strong defences snuffing out any attack. However as thesecond half progressed another dominant performance by the pack at scrum and Lineout meant that Skewen began to gain more control over the pace and style of the game.

Some fine kicking out of hand by Anthony Busseli meant that Skewen were able to dominate territorially and even with a fine defensive effort Nant found it increasingly more difficult to escape from their 22.

From a driving lineout/ maul close to the Nant line Reece Jenkins crossed to score dragging the rest of the pack with him.

A further period of extended pressure led to a number of attacking scrums and a number of defensive penalties which gave the referee no options other than to award a penalty try following yet another collapsed scrum close to the line.

Skewen continued to create a territorial stranglehold on the Nant line and from the final play of the game , another driving lineout, substitute flanker Dai Morgan was able to cross for a try.

Anthony Busselli added 2 conversions to his tally.

Final score Skewen 24 Nant Conwy 0.

Overall an excellent team performance in what was a typically hard fought cup game with no quarter given or asked by either team.

Man of the Match awarded to Luke Myatt for his exceptional work rate both in attack and defence

Skewen through to the semi-final where they will meet either, Penallta, Newcastle Emlyn or Ystrad Rhondda at a neutral venue. The draw being made on Tuesday
