22/09/18: Skewen vs Kenfig Hill Match Report

On Saturday the 22nd of September Skewen welcomed Kenfig Hill to Tennant Park. As both teams were on equal points but Kenfig Hill 1 place ahead on points today’s game was of high importance.

Kenfig Hill started the game with more urgency and was in the lead after 2 minutes with a well taken penalty goal.

Skewen began to exert pressure and spent some time in the Mules 22 but only came away with a penalty after 15 minutes by Anthony Busselli.

Despite having the lion’s share of possession and territory Skewen, due to ill-discipline and poor control, failed to turn the advantage into points.

Indeed the only other points of the half were scored by the Mules with another penalty by outside half Nicky Giles on the 34th minute.

The second half was much as the 1st. Skewen had possession and territory but lacked control when in attacking positions. The Kenfig Hill defence and line speed caused havoc with any Skewen attack, the result of which was that Skewen attempted to force play after play often running themselves into trouble.

Kenfig Hill on the other hand had far better control through 8, 9 and 10 enabling them to have a clear and controlled exit strategy when under territorial pressure. Indeed the only other score of the game was from a well-placed kick to touch well inside the Skewen 22. As they had done on a number of occasions the Mules jumpers were able to disrupt the line out turning over the ball. The following driving maul saw the mules cross the line for a try converted by outside half Nicky Giles.

Final Score Skewen 3 Kenfig Hill 13

A very disappointing result in many ways. 2 home games lost, both of them silver ball games. Another game lost, not due to the lack of possession or territory but to the lack of control and discipline. Skewen were unable to manage the mules attacking defence and subsequently lost all structure with little coordination between forwards and backs. Forwards were going in ones and twos and backs were going sideways. The difference between the sides was the control the Mules had at 8,9 and 10 enabling Nicky Giles to relieve any pressure Skewen put them under.
