Skewen v Mumbles Match Report

On Wednesday 22nd of April Skewen RFC welcomed Mumbles to Tenant Park .Despite their lowly position in the league Mumbles had run us close at Underhill Park earlier in the season.

The first quarter of the game was somewhat stop start with the boys needing to run off the bumps and bruises from last Saturday before they could get into their stride.

Skewen scored first after 15 minutes with a try from Jaimie Kirkhouse following his clean break from an attacking scrum in the Mumbles 22. This went unconverted.

Skewens second try came from a show and go from Anthony Busselli who crossed near the posts following good phase play by the forwards. Anthony also added the conversion

Skewens third try of the half came from good handling by the three quarters which led to Gareth Morris crossing under the posts giving Anthony Busselli an easy conversion.

Half time score Skewen 19 Mumbles nil.

In the second half Mumbles scored first with a penalty but Skewen were able to pick up the pace of the game, and began playing with confidence, using the ball well and adding width to the game.

In all a further 4 tries were scored. 

The first of these came following a clean break by wing Mark Harvey who split the defence taking the ball deep into the Mumbles 22 before passing to his opposite wing Mathew Billet who crossed in the corner. This went unconverted.

The next Skewen try followed a period of extreme pressure on the Mumbles line. Skewen being awarded a penalty took the lineout option which led to Stefan Bond crossing the linefollowing a driving lineout. This was converted by Anthony Busselli.

Skewens third  try of the half came from  spectacular  inter passing between backs and forwards started by AnthonyBusselli from within his own half and finished by him crossing near the posts enabling him to convert his own try.

Not to be outdone Mumbles continued to fight and scored their own try from a driving maul following a period of pressure on the Skewen line. This went unconverted.

Skewens final try came at the very end following good phase play by the forward when Kevin James took the ball some 10-15 yards out and in his own inimitable way crashed over under the posts  giving Anthony Busselli the easiest of conversions.

Final Score Skewen 45 Mumbles 8

Overall despite the slow start Skewen showed that they have the ability, strength and confidence to not only dominate upfront but also move use the ball well through the hands to score exciting tries.

Man of the match Anthony Busselli who, as  well as scoring 2 tries and 5 conversions, led his backs well varying the pace and flow of the game.
