Skewen v Bonymaen Match Report

On Saturday the12th of September Skewen RFC welcomed Bonymaen to Tenant Park for the first home game of the season. With both sides having convincing wins the previous week and the fact that it was last season’s champions playing the runners up everyone was expecting a close hard fought game. No one could have expected the feast of rugby that was to follow

The first 30 minutes was a close fought encounter with both sides taking and losing the lead.

Bonymaen led 3-0 after 5 minutes following a well taken penalty by their full back.

This was closely followed by Skewen’s first try scored by winger Mathew Billet who receiving the ball out wide stepped inside, straightened up and went 30 yards to score. This went unconverted. ( 5-3)

Bonymaen then went ahead with another penalty (5-6) which was shortly after cancelled out by a successful penalty from Anthony Busselli  (8-6) A further penalty from Bonymaen full back saw them take the lead back (8-9).

30 minutes into the game came Skewens second try. James Ball breaking close to a ruck feeding the ball to Ed price who was in close support running 30 yards to score. Try converted by Anthony Busselli (15-9)

This was shortly followed by a try from centre Cam Morris after  his fellow centre Kevin James had driven the ball into the heart of the Bony defence feeding Ed Price in support who made the break passing to Cam Morris to score. (22-9)

Skewen achieved their bonus point try just before half time when following a penalty kick to touch quick ball from the lineout saw Kevin James again taking the ball up and several Bony defenders over the line to score. Try converted by Anthony Busselli

Half time score Skewen 27 Bonymaen 9

Skewen soon got back into the scoring habit when following a clean break by Mathew Billet Kevin (Kipper) James crossed again near the post. However the weight of the many Bony defenders he took over the line with him had an effect and he was forced to leave the field injured. Try converted by Anthony Busselli (34-9)

Skewens sixth try came following a clean break by full back Gareth Morris who was able to make space for winger Mark Harvey to show how clinical a finisher he is to race in for  what was the first of his three tries. Converted by Anthony Busselli. (41-5)

Skewens seventh try came from some brilliant interplay by the backs. Mark Harvey again showing his pace and finishing ability to score. Try converted by Anthony Busselli (48-9)

Bony continued to commit to the game and attempted to play some good attacking football but time after time were met by a wall of Skewen defenders who knocked them backwards and sideways at every opportunity. Bony did however score their only try after a period of good forward pressure saw them rumble over for a try. (48-16)

Skewen didn’t have to wait long for their seventh try when following the  kick off Mark Harvey leapt high to take the ball out of the hands of a Bony forward made ground and was later on hand to pass to Mathew Billet to race in for his second try. Try converted by Anthony Busselli (55-16)

Skewens ninth and final try again came from winger Mark Harvey. Some good inter play amongst the forwards and backs saw mark receiving the ball on the Bony 22 and with his pace left the Bony defence lead footed to score in the corner for his hat trick. Try went unconverted

Final Score Skewen 60 Bonymaen 16

Man of the Match???????

The comments from old players and lifelong Skewen supporters in the clubhouse after the game summed it up. All said this was the best team performance they had seen from a Skewen team. Everyone from number 1 to number 20 was outstanding. They all deserved the title men of the match. They may have been some fine finishing but each try was made by the other 14 players

I think the old adage rings true.

It’s the fat boys that win the game but the pretty boys who decide by how much.
