29/09/18: Plate - Tondu vs Skewen Match Report

On Saturday the 29th September Skewen travelled to Tondu to face the Water Wheelers for the 2nd time in 4 weeks. Having lost the 1st game in the league at home everyone was hoping for a better result away in the Plate competition.

The early passages of play did not bode well for Skewen as within 10 minutes Tondu had scored their 1st try from an attacking scrum on the Skewen 22. The ball was quickly moved through the backs each taking the ball at pace turning the Skewen defence and enabling the wing to cross for a try which was converted.

On the half hour mark it was again Tondu who were in control. A kick out by Skewen was retrieved and run back. Good phase place and quick handling again saw a try out wide for Tondu which went unconverted.

Half time score Skewen 0 Tondu 12

The second half started much more positively for Skewen who now seemed to be playing with better control. A penalty kick to touch well inside the Tondu 22 saw a clean take and drive by the Skewen eight cross the line for a try claimed by lee Dunsford and converted by Anthony Busselli.

Skewen now appeared in control and on the 15th minute scored their 2nd try. A Skewen scrum inside their half saw the ball moved quickly by full back Sion King into the hands of replacement centre Mark Harvey who turning the defence raced in to score under the post for a try converted by Anthony Busselli.

Skewen appeared to have sealed the game immediately with their 3rd try, A kick out by Tondu was received by No 8 Jo Lewis who drove at the Tondu defence. The ball was quickly moved to full back Sion King who fed the ball wide to centre Mark Harvey who attacked the defence feeding winger Jordan Adderley to race in to score under the post, the try being converted by Anthony Busselli.

But the game was not yet won as Tondu continued to contest the game scoring their 3rd try on the half hour mark following an attacking scrum and quick hands crossing in the corner for an unconverted try.

On the 35th minute Skewen were again able to gain some control and territory. This led to a successful penalty attempt by Anthony Busselli.

The last 5 minutes saw Tondu throw everything at the Skewen line. Skewen defence held but their discipline didn’t. A number of defensive penalties meant that Skewen were pinned to their line, with penalty line out following penalty line out. To add to the pressure the penalties resulted in a yellow card leaving Skewen down to 14 men as Tondu pressed for their 4th try which if converted would give them the victory in the case of a draw on try count. The try came in the final play when forward pressure and good support play by the backs saw the Skewen defence beaten out wide for a try which fortunately for Skewen went unconverted.

Final Score Skewen 24 Tondu 22

A very hard fought win. Skewen living to fight another day “just”.

There were positives. The set piece went well with the lineout far more consistent than last week. However overall it was more an effort of individuals as opposed to a polished team performance. The game changer in the second half was the pace injected by Mark Harvey at outside centre following yet another injury to Gareth Morris, scoring a try himself and creating one for Jordan Adderley. It was very much a case of the Curates egg good in parts but not so good in others. There were periods of control but at times we were left wide open enabling the losing side to outscore us 4 tries to 3.
