Tata Steel v Skewen 1/10/16

On Saturday 1st October the Skewen travelled to the SCOW to play TATA.

The TATA pack dominated the early encounters especially at the scrummage.

After  4 minutes Skewen failed to clear their line and a scrum to Tata 10 yds out led to a pick up and score by theNo8 5-0

After 10 min Skewen attack on half way was foiled by charge down by the No8 who received a favourable bounce into his hands to race 40 yds to score 10-0

TATAs dominant  scrum continued to give them an attacking platform allowing them to maintain territorial pressure

After 32 mins Skewen were awarded a free kick in the Tata half which was quickly taken .The ball moved quickly through the hands from mark Harvey and Jaime Kirkhouse to Anthony Busselli who crossed near the post for a try he also converted 12-7

Half time 12-7

Tata continued to gain territorial advantage in the second half relying heavily on their strong scrum and after 24 mins scores a further try 17-7

As the second half progressed Skewen came more into the game winning more possession and controlling the territory better. The set piece although still under pressure gained some parity.

With 5 minutes to go Skewen were able to pressurise the TATA line good phase play and ball retention saw  a ruck under the TATA posts. Quick thinking by outside half Anthony Busselli  changed the direction of play  to the blindside feeding wing Mathew Billet who crossed to score 12- 17

Skewen threw everything into the last 5 minutes of play pinning Tata into the 22, however TATA hung on through desperate defence and Skewen were unable to convert 5 mins pressure into points

Played 5 won 3 lost 2. Points for 81 points against 89. Tries for 9 tries against 11

An excellent 60 minute performance by a Skewen Team that allowed the opposition to take early advantage and cause immense problems to the Skewen set piece. Another example that Skewen can compete with the best in the championship but they have to maintain control and limit errors as at this level teams will punish.
