Skewen v Waunarlwydd Match Report

On Saturday the 31st of January Skewen RFC welcomed Waunarlwydd to Tenant Park for what was to be a hard fought and well contested match.

Indeed Waunarlwydd drew 1st blood early in the game when following a period of pressure in the Skewen 22 good handling by both backs and forwards led to their full back crossing near the posts for a try which for good measure he also converted.

Skewen bounced back with some fine attacking play and were soon rewarded with a try of their own Following some quick handling by the three quarters, full back Gareth Morris crossed over wide out for a try which unfortunately  went unconverted.

Skewen were unlucky not to score further following a 50 yard break by centre Kevin James ,the play breaking down yards from the line and again when a kick and chase by wing Mark Harvey was deemed by the referee not to have been correctly grounded.

Skewen  were now building on a solid platform at both scrum and lineout and it was from a scrum close to the Waunarlwydd line that No 8 Aled Mogford  was able to drive over for Skewens’  second try which was converted by Anthony Busseli.

The score at Half time was 12-7 and it was still anyone’s game.

As the second half progressed Skewens’ dominance at the set piece was apparent although at ruck and maul both sides competed evenly.

Following some good tactical kicking by both Anthony Busseli and Kevin James Skewen put pressure on the Waunarlwydd line and the dominance at the scrum led to a further push over try from no 8 Aled Mogford

Waunarlwydd continued to compete fiercely and were rewarded with a try from a driving maul near to the Skewen line. This went unconverted

In the final quarter Skewen made a number of tactical substitutions, one of whom scrum half Jaimie Kirkhouse, broke from the base of the scrum in the Waunarlwydd 22 feeding a pass to man of the match Kevin James who crossed over for what was to be the match and bonus point winning try.

Overall a very hard fought match between two sides intent on moving the ball and playing rugby
