26/10/19: Ammanford vs Skewen

On the 26th Oct Skewen travelled to fellow strugglers Ammanford. This was a game both sides needed desperately to win.

Ammanford had the better of both territory and possession for the first 10 minutes. Skewen giving away a number of early penalties. Amman were able to open the score on 10 minutes when a penalty kick to touch in the Skewen 22 saw a clean take and drive to the line for an unconverted try. Skewen 0 Ammanford 5.

Ammanford kept up the pressure on the Skewen defence which held out enabling Skewen to get more into the game. Skewen opened their score with a well taken penalty by full back Anthony Busselli. Skewen 3 Ammanford 5

Skewen were able to take the lead towards the end of the first half when a kick out of defence was followed up putting the Amman defence in trouble. The subsequent turnover and series of drives saw No 8 Richard Davies cross for a try converted by Anthony Busselli.

Half time score Skewen 10 Ammanford 5.

The 3rd quarter of the match was very much “even Stephens” with both defences in control. Amman were able to close the gap with a well taken penalty after 30 minutes of the second half. Skewen 10 Ammanford 8.

Within 2 minutes Amman were able to Snatch the lead when a missed tackle in midfield allowed Amman to cross for a converted try. Skewen 10 Ammanford 15.

The final 10 minutes was hectic with Skewen throwing everything at Ammanford. A turnover by James Price in the Amman half saw possession come to Skewen put pressure on Amman which led to an attacking scrum 10 yards from the Amman line. The ball was taken up strongly by centre Tom Kingdom sucking in the Amman defence. The ball was quickly re cycled to now fly half Anthony Busselli who wrong footed the Amman defence to cross near the posts for a try which he also converted. Skewen 17 Ammanford 15.

Full time score Skewen 17 Ammanford 15.

A first win for the “Skew”. Both teams fought hard for a result and despite it being a bottom of the table clash both sides attempted to play football. The small margins are still there. But for a number of handling errors and “given away” penalties the score might have been even more in Skewens favour. For a small squad ravaged by injuries, our available players are staring to put performances together. Our set piece is getting stronger and our structures are starting to work. Unlike many clubs around us we do not have the luxury of being able to “borrow” players from elsewhere and it is to the credit of our committed squad and coaches that we are seeing improvements in every game.
