Tondu v Skewen Match Report

On Saturday the 5th March Skewen welcomed Tondu to Tennant Park. Many will remember the sunny day some years ago when scrum 5 visited Tennant Park to see Skewen, at that time the only unbeaten team in the league, lose to Tondu. Every game played against Tondu over recent years has proven to be a close feast of attractive rugby.

It was obvious from the start that Tondu hadn’t just turned up to be second best. Their commitment at ruck, maul and tackleinitially proved difficult to handle and in the early stages the Skewen pack found it difficult to gain control and momentum.

Indeed it was Pencoed who had the 1st score on the 20th minute with a well taken penalty. 0-3

As the half progressed the Skewen pack began to create pressure through phase play and on the 38th minute quick ball recycled inside the Tondu half saw centre Tom Kingdom take the ball at pace stepped outside then in to race 30 yards for Skewens first try converted by Anthony Busselli. 7-3

On half time full back Gareth Morris entered the line at pace within the Skewen half quick interpassing with wing Mathew Billet, Morris and Anthony Busselli  saw the outside half race in from 30 yards to score a try which he went on to convert. A fine try which proved that letting the ball do the work often pays good results.

Half time Skewen 14 Tondu 3

Skewen kept the pressure on in the second half. Pressure at scrum led to a penalty kick to touch. The subsequent lineout maul was driven over with James Reeves claiming the try converted by Anthony Busselli. 21-3

Again a line out drive in the Tondu half quickly recycled this time saw winger Jordan Adderley take the ball at pace on the inside shoulder of outside half Anthony Busselli to cross for the bonus point try which was converted by Anthony Busselli 28-3

Skewens 5th try came from quick passing through the ¾ line to winger Mathew Billet who stepped inside and outside his opposite number before racing in to score. 33-3

Skewens 6th and final try came from good forward pressure at scrum and ruck retaining ball through several phases drawing in the Tondu defence. Full back Gareth Morris appeared at pace from nowhere  down an almost non-existent blind side to cross to score the try converted by outside half Anthony Busselli 40-3

Final Score Skewen 40 Tondu 3

A good team performance against a tough Tondu side who tackled to the bitter end. Skewen where able to pick up the pace and momentum as the game progressed and the inclusion of quality players off the bench certainly helped.

A GOOD WIN MADE EVEN SWEETER BY THE NEWS THAT AMMANFORD HAD ONLY MANAGED TO SNEAK A DRAW AT SEVEN SISTERS.
