Skewen v Seven Sisters Match Report

On Saturday the23rd of January Skewen welcomed Seven Sisters to Tennant Park. Since our last encounter at the start of the season Seven have worked their way up the table and were sitting comfortably in fourth place so a tough game was expected.

Skewen opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a penalty by outside half Anthony Busselli. 3-0

Despite a lot of possession and territory, mistakes and errors kept the scoreboard static until the 30 minute mark when Anthony Busselli converted his second penalty 6-0

This was quickly followed by Skewens 1st try. A break by full back Gareth Morris took the ball into the Seven 22 some quick passes and well placed bounces saw the ball reach centre Matthew Billet who raced in to score. Converted by Anthony Busselli 13-0

Skewen were by now exerting a  heap  of pressure on the Seven defence and the 2nd try came from a series of driving mauls, the last crossing the line for Aled Mogford to claim the try. Converted by Anthony Busselli 20-0

Skewens 3rd try came following a pinched lineout on the half way. Some good interplay between backs and forwards saw the ball reach Mark Harvey on the wing. Taking the ball into the 22 he grubber kicked past the Seven defence and won the footrace to score. 28-0

Skewens 4th and bonus point try came on the 20th minute .Good ball retention and interplay between backs and forwards stretched the seven defence allowing a break by Anthony Busselli who could possibly have reached the line but gave the perfect scoring pass to Mathew Billet who crossed and scored under the posts. Converted by Anthony Busselli 35-0

Skewens 5th try came following some clever play by full back Gareth Morris who broke the line at pace stepping inside the defence to cross to score. Converted by Anthony Busselli 42-0

Seven sisters never gave up and were rewarded for their efforts when they scored a try in the corner following some good driving play by the forwards.42-5

Skewens 6th and final try came from some quick thinking by wing Jordan Adderley who taking a quick tapped penalty on the half way line broke the first up tackle to race 40 yards to score under the posts. Converted by Anthony Busselli 49-5

Final score Skewen 49 Seven Sisters 5

This was not the case of one side playing badly allowing the other to win. Seven played to the end and proved themselves to be a tough team capable of playing football. Today we saw Skewen playing with the control, pace and intensity that was missing in the second half last week. Over all this was a very good team effort with some excellent individual performances. Even the Seven supporters agreed that man for man every Skewen player had the edge over his opponent.

A good result against a tough team with the bonus of being our 9 out of 9 wins in the silver ball with the all-important tries scored. One silver ball game left against Maesteg next week.
