15/12/18: Tondu vs Skewen

On Saturday the 15th December Skewen travelled to Tondu to face the Water Wheelers for the 3rd time this season. With the score at 1 all Skewen were hoping to avenge the defeat on the first Saturday of the season.

In atrocious conditions and with 10 players unavailable a tough match was anticipated.

In spite of the conditions both sides attempted to play football from the start with Skewen getting the better of the territory and possession.

Skewen were the first to score, some good phase play and ball retention saw Skewen attack in the Tondu half.  Quick possession was moved along the backs wide to the left drawing good Tondu defence, The ball was quickly re cycled at the ruck and moved right through the hands giving winger Luke Hughes the opportunity to score an unconverted try out wide.

Tondu were able to close the gap with a penalty late in the half

Half time score Skewen 5 Tondu 3

Having played into a strong wind and driving rain in the first half Skewen found themselves again playing into the changing wind and rain for most of the second half.

Despite the conditions fly half Anthony Busselli controlled the possession and territory well, keeping his forwards on the front foot.

Despite some stout defence by the Water wheeler defence Skewen were able to increase the Lead with a well taken penalty by Fly half Anthony Busselli.

With only 5 points in it there was all to play for, and Tondu threw everything at Skewen but the strong defence held.

Skewen were able to extend the lead in the dying minutes with another penalty from Anthony Busselli, kicked in the old fashioned way off the ground as no tee was to be found. Tondu would not give up and were able to retrieve a losing bonus point with a penalty kick with almost the last play of the game.

Final Score Skewen 11 Tondu 6

A very hard fought win in absolutely atrocious conditions. All credit must be given to both sides for the positive football they attempted to play and the commitment both teams showed in both defence and attack.

An excellent team performance all round. A fine performance by “Wilbur” who, stepped in at the last minute to help at hooker, due to Steffan Bonds Late withdrawal. A fine ball carrying performance by our new second row Kevin Kipper James who made more yards from second row than he does from centre, winning him forward of the match and an excellent all round game by scrum half Jamie Kirkhouse saw him chosen as back of the match.
