01/12/18: Skewen vs Waunarlwydd

On Saturday the 1st December Skewen RFC welcomed Waunarlwydd to Tennant Park for the 1st meeting of the clubs this season. With a number of players unavailable Skewen were able to call upon 2 senior Neath players in Aaron Bramwell at full back and former All Black international Regan King at inside centre.

Skewen opened the scoring on the 5th minute following quick ball from a ruck on the Waun 22,scrum half Jaime Kirkhouse attacked the blind side feeding centre Regan King ,who noticing the space out wide floated the perfect pass to second row James Price who crossed in the corner for an unconverted try. The Waun responded almost immediately when from a Skewen attack the ball went loose enabling the Waun defence to kick ahead. The ball skidded and bounced in the wet conditions and all attempts to secure it failed. A further kick ahead saw the Waun score under the posts for a converted try. Skewen 5 Waunarlwydd 7

The remainder of the first measured out quite evenly with both sides defending the other out of the game

Full time Skewen 31 Waunarlwydd 7

A very well fought game with both sides showing endeavour and spirit. A master class at centre by All Black Regan King, who by his weight of pass and clever use of space brought out excellent performances from his co three quarters and gave his half backs the confidence to play their games. His presence not only had a positive effect on the Skewen players but also on the Waun XV who must be praised for their efforts in both attack and defence.

A fine game at full back by Aaron Bramwell ensured that the Skewen pack was always going forward.

It was a privilege to have Regan King in a Skewen shirt but it was a lifetime experience for young Morgan Meacham in his first senior game to have outside him an All Black international.
