26/01/19 Bonymaen vs Skewen: Match Report

On the 26th of January Skewen travelled to our near neighbours Bonymaen on what was to be a dark wet and windy Saturday

Skewen had much of the first 10 minutes in both territory and possession but were unable to turn that pressure into points.

Bonymaen gradually came back into the game, gaining territorial control with some shrewd tactical kicking making use of the strong wind in their favour. Bonymaen took the lead with a try and conversion after 20 minutes. A penalty kick to touch in the Skewen 22 and quick ball saw Bony drive and release the ball to the backs. A missed tackle in midfield created enough gap for the centre to glide through for the try. 0-7.

Both sides attempted to play football despite the conditions but no further scores were achieved in the half

The conditions at the start of the second half appeared to deteriorate and a change of wind direction saw Skewen playing against it again in the second half. Again excellent tactical kicking saw Skewen having to play the game from deep in their half. Bony were able to increase their lead with a penalty kick on the 10th minute which was shortly after balanced out with a Skewen penalty by Anthony Busselli. 3-10

20 minutes into the second half Bony again increased their lead with a well taken penalty kick.3-13

With 10 minutes to go Bony sealed the game with a try and conversion. Some aimless kicking out of defence enabled Bony to kick back deep into the Skewen 22 , the chase putting the Skewen defence under pressure, the try coming from a series of forward drives.

Final Score Skewen 3 Bonymaen 20

Mark Whitlock 0-1

A well-deserved win by a well drilled and efficient Bonymaen team who, in atrocious conditions, played their football in all the right places making few mistakes.  Yet again it was clear that, with the inability to have consistency in selection, gaps began to appear. Every player gave their all, but with forced selection changes in almost every area of the team, both before and during the game, pressure told in the second half. Yet again, due to the unavailability of players, we have been unable to have consistent selection, and this has its consequences on the field of play. Today another 14 Players were unavailable for selection (James Reeves Lucus Edwards Craig  Astley Aled Mogford Marcus Boobier Richard Davies Lee Dunsford  Jo Lewis  Rhodri Wells Andrew Collins Lloyd Phillips Luke Hughes Jordan Adderley and Gareth Morris). Several of the players who took the field were either carrying injuries or hadn’t played for some months. Indeed, in spite of the result, we must recognise the effort put in by all the players, especially Paul Mitchell who at 38 came out of retirement to help out in the front row and who put in a big performance at the set piece and made his presence felt at ruck and maul.
