16/11/19: Dunvant vs Skewen

On the 16th November Skewen travelled to Dunvant.

Skewen started well with a penalty by full back Anthony Busselli after 12 minutes.  Skewen 3 Dunvant 0

Dunvant seemed to take control of the game putting the Skewen defence under considerable pressure. The only points however came from a penalty after 22 minutes.  Skewen 3 Dunvant 3

Dunvant continued the pressure and stretched the score with a penalty on the 29 minute mark.

Skewen 3 Dunvant 6

Just before half time Dunvant scored their first try. A failure by Skewen to secure attacking ball in the Dunvant 22 saw the ball recycled quickly through the hands. Some excellent passing and support at speed saw Dunvant score an unconverted try in the corner.

Half time Skewen 3 Dunvant 11.

After only 4 minutes of the half Dunvant further stretched their lead with a try following another turnover and kick ahead, the bounce beating the Skewen defenders and falling into the hands of the Dunvant attacker to score an unconverted try. Skewen 3 Dunvant 16.

Dunvant scored their 3rd try after 10 minutes again from a turnover at a Skewen defensive lineout. Having stolen the ball the Dunvant pack were able to drive over for another unconverted try, Skewen 3 Dunvant 21. At this point the game looked lost for Skewen with Dunvant playing with pace, attacking the Skewen defence at every opportunity. However Skewen seemed to galvanise their performance and began to seize a grasp on the game. After 20 minutes some quick play by half backs Rhodri Wells and Fly half Jaimie Kirkhouse saw flanker Lee Dunsford cross for a  TRY CONVERTED BY FULL BACK Anthony Busselli. Skewen 10 Dunvant 21.

Skewen continued to take the momentum away from Dunvant and on the 30 minute  mark where able to reduce the gap when following a penalty and subsequent lineout in the Dunvant 22 a clean take and drive saw scrum half Rhodri Wells cross for a try converted by Anthony Busselli. Skewen 17 Dunvant 21

Skewen spent the last 10 minutes of the game peppering the Dunvant line. A series of 5 penalties in the Dunvant 22 saw Skewen push the Dunvant defence to the limit. In an attempt to snatch a victory Skewen chose to take a series of kicks to touch. On a number of occasions the subsequent drives saw Skewen unlucky not to cross the line with a series of desperate penalties being given away by the defence. Even with the final play of the game Skewen continued to strive for the winning try and again only desperate defence taking winger Liam Douglas high into touch prevented what would have been an incredible win for Skewen.

Final Score Skewen 17 Dunvant 21.

An amazing match with both sides showing considerable commitment and effort. Dunvant attacked with pace and profited from a series of turnovers. All praise must be given to every Skewen player who, from being all but dead and gone, turned the game on its head in the final quarter almost snatching victory from what appeared to be total defeat.  Mistakes and penalties took the game away from us, commitment and effort in the final quarter almost brought it back. In the end Dunvant clung on by any means for the victory
